Bank holiday and for the first time in a while I decided against the pub crawl, all day beer garden and festival offerings in favour of a chilled and relaxing weekend after a long stressful week of work.
From fitness bloggers to foodies, Ben’s Canteen is always popping up on my social media feeds. I’m that one friend who likes to know exactly where the group is going for food so that I can browse the menu online, stalk their Instagram page and debate for ages what I’ll order before going through the whole process again when I’m there in person.
We went to the Battersea branch which is chilled and cosy. As we ordered our drinks (I always have a silent squeak of delight to myself when I have the milk for my tea served in a cute cup or glass bottle) we could see the queue start to form out the door.
I was tempted by the Egg’s Pig Out and the Fried Chicken Benedict, even the burgers sounded amazing but we ended up choosing and sharing, and by sharing I mean I ate my full plate and half of my friend’s, the Sweetcorn and Courgette fritters (with halloumi, balsamic roast tomato chutney and a poached egg) and the Banana Pancakes (with salted caramel sauce, yoghurt and maple syrup).
The pancakes were INSANELY good! So rich and indulgent! The fritters were also great and complimented nicely by the chutney which helped the dish feel less dry. The most important test is of course the poached egg… perfectly done!
I was full before I even started on my friend’s pancakes but I packed them away nicely and left to spend the rest of the day in a food coma with a pint of pimms at PopBrixton. Lovely day spent clinging onto the last of summer!
